President Mall: Finding Balance

August 8, 2025 in Guest Columns

If you’re feeling overwhelmed in this busy summer market, you are not alone. In this competitive industry, it’s easy to find ourselves with jam-packed schedules and plenty of reasons to keep them that way. It’s true that it requires a lot of time and energy to support our clients—that’s the nature of the job. But I believe that to have longevity in this career, you must also dedicate some time and energy to support yourself.

While the market does ebb and flow, and this hectic season will soon ease back, if you wait for a quiet time at work to practice self-care, that time may never come. Without intentional time for rest and self-care, you may find yourself burnt out before the end of the summer.

If your calendar is full of appointments, and you often find yourself too busy to take time for yourself, I encourage you to schedule out time for your mental wellness as you would any other priority. This could, of course, come in the form of appointments with a mental health professional, but I also mean making time for what feeds your soul and calms your mind, such as quality time with family or friends, time for your hobbies, and time for rest and recuperation.

When you’re feeling overwhelmed with work, I encourage you to reach out to your peers and mentors in this industry. The Kansas City real estate industry is full of practiced agents and brokers who have withstood a wide variety of challenges and market conditions and come out on the other side. See what strategies they have adopted over the years to balance caring for their clients and caring for themselves. Even just a phone call with a trusted colleague could help to recharge your energy.

Additionally, NAR has a collection of articles, webinars and more to help you with work-life balance, stress management and mental wellness that could be a great place to start.

If you have a tried-and-true method for prioritizing self-care and wellness as a real estate professional, please post a comment below so we can learn from each other and make it through the dog days of summer together.
