Every April, REALTORS® commemorate the passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968 and reflect on housing discrimination and segregation, past and present. As real estate professionals, we have an opportunity to be a part of equitable and inclusive change.
Navigating fair housing laws is paramount to ensuring ethical and legal business practices. It is crucial to familiarize yourself thoroughly with federal, state and local fair housing regulations. These laws prohibit discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, familial status and disability. We should avoid any actions or statements that could be construed as discriminatory, whether intentional or not. Always treat customers and clients equally and provide the same level of service, regardless of their background.
Additionally, utilize inclusive language and imagery in all marketing materials to demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusivity. Avoid making assumptions about consumers’ preferences based on stereotypes or personal biases. When showing properties, present a range of options that suit the needs and preferences of each individual client, without steering them toward or away from specific neighborhoods based on protected characteristics or subjective opinions. By staying informed, using inclusive practices, and treating all clients with fairness and respect, real estate professionals can successfully navigate fair housing laws and build trusting relationships with clients from all walks of life.
This April, let’s commit to breaking down barriers and fostering fair housing for all. Every person deserves a place to call home, regardless of background. Join me, your KCRAR DEI Committee and REALTORS® everywhere in advocating for fair housing!
