Kansas City REALTOR® Jennifer Justus joins the American Royal Rodeo for the second year as a mounted shooter at the Hale Arena in Kansas City, Mo. May 4-6. The event, which Justus has been involved in for three years, involves firing at targets with a single action revolver on horseback.
“I love this sport!” Justus said. “For a brief moment, it makes the outside world disappear and focuses all of your energy on the arena. Horse and rider work as a team towards the common goal of completing the course perfectly. The challenge is awesome!”
Mounted shooting requires a high level of skill, concentration and precision from both the rider and the horse, as well as a thorough understanding of firearm safety. A popular sport in many countries including the United States, Canada, and Australia, this fast-growing sport has its own governing bodies and competition circuits, which Justus travels around the country to compete in.
“If you had told me 10 years ago that I would be buying a big truck and a 40’ gooseneck trailer to haul horses all over and compete, I would’ve told you you were crazy,” Justus said, “but it’s honestly been one of the most empowering and amazing things I’ve ever done in my life. I absolutely love it.”
Admission to each day’s mounted shooting event is free 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the American Royal May 4-6.
